Thorburn Australia has had a long association with the Korean owned Zinc Refinery in Townsville assisting with the design and construction of the $650M plant. Shane Thorburn was initially heavily involved with the development of the plant wide control system and network communications.
The plant control system consisted of 12 distinct areas, each controlling the associated motors, valves, instrumentation and packages. Connecting these areas was the plant wide network made up of 3 V-LANS (Office, Control and HV).
The overall project consisted of some 890 motors, 770 Instruments and Control Valves and 32 Major Vendor Packages all designed, installed and commissioned on time and under budget.
A truly monumental effort and a credit to the ability for all those involved to work across language and cultural divides.
